PSHE

Intent

At St Leonard’s Primary School, PSHE is at the heart of our children’s education. We strongly believe in a holistic approach to teaching and learning, which enables children to develop and flourish intellectually, emotionally, socially, and morally. Our intent is that our children will develop the skills required to become ‘lifelong learners’, who are engaged with the world they live in and inspired to be responsible citizens who contribute positively within their community. For this reason, we place a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, resilience building and the nurturing of both mental and physical health. Alongside this, we also promote mindfulness which allows children to regulate their own emotions and enables them to channel their energies in a concentrated and focused manner.

Intended Impact

We forsee that our PSHE approach will have a positive impact upon all children and provide them with a multitude of benefits. We envision that when children leave St Leonard’s they will all:

  • have a ready willingness to try new things/experiences.
  • challenge themselves and persevere when they encounter difficulties.
  • understand how to stay safe and healthy.
  • understand how to make, develop and maintain positive relationships with other people.
  • contribute positively to the diverse, multicultural society they belong to.
  • be confident and have a strong understanding of self.
  • show empathy towards others.

Implementation

As a school, we follow the ‘Jigsaw’ PSHE scheme and it is delivered on a weekly basis across the whole school. It is our belief that a thorough and meaningful understanding of the PSHE curriculum leads to excellence and high attainment across the curriculum and beyond into children’s later lives. Our curriculum ensures that all children regardless of background, ability and any additional needs are able to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.

Using ‘Jigsaw’, knowledge, skills and understanding are developed in the following areas:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

'Jigsaw' is a whole-school, spiral curriculum which aligns with the National Curriculum. Each theme is revisited in every year group in order to build on the learning from the previous year and ensure that children’s skills and knowledge within PSHE progress year-on-year. Each new theme is also introduced through a shared assembly at the beginning of each half-term.
